How to make a gold frame

SCARY but Framed

Hello Maurice
I hope you'll have fun with this one.
Remember to click the back button on the browser tool bar to return here.
I have to figure out how to get the back button on my page to return you properly.
Thanks.
Hugs... Elizabeth

I have received a lot of pleasure making gold frames for many of my photos.

There are a few things that you will need before you can make a frame like the one above.

First you need a copy of PaintShop Pro 7, which you already have. (I will have to see what adjustments, if any, have to be made for PSP6.)

One of the other things you might still need is the Pool Shadow filter (plugin) from Filter Factory Gallery A. You may download all the Filter Factory galleries as well as the Andrew Filters here. If the filters won't work you may need a new MSVCRT10.dll file which you can get from a link at that same site. Unzip the filter folder and place the contents in your PSP plugin folder. The new filters will be available the next time you open Paint Shop Pro.

As you gain a lot more filters, create a plugin folder outside of PSP and link to it from within PSP. You can link to 2 plugin folders outside of the PSP folder.

First you need a graphic. Here is one I just happened to have around.

SCARY

Open your graphic in Paint Shop Pro or right click on the blue bird picture, copy and paste into Paint Shop Pro.

Change your background color to #BBAA72 or 187-170-114. It is the icky green color in this screen shot.

background shot

In the new window choose how wide you would like the border to be. Click okay. If it isn't to your liking you can click on either the edit|undo or the "undo" arrow and repeat, making the border a more pleasing thickness.

border 5

This border you see here is border size 5. Note the color. The dotted line effect (marching ants) you will achieve in the next step.

Select the magic wand. magic wand tool

Open up the detached Tool Options box by holding your mouse over it.

Tool Options Box

Make sure that the Tolerance and Feathering are set to zero. You can get some neat effects by setting them to different things, but not this time around.

Using the magic wand click on the green border. The line of marching ants should appear on both sides of your border all the way around the picture. (See picture above.)

Click on Effects|Plugin Filters| Filter Factory Gallery A|Pool Shadow.

A new window opens up. Visible will be a minature of your picture. The whole thing in this view will have the pool shadow applied. Only the selected area (the border) will have it applied in the full graphic.

Pool Shadow

You can adjust the amount of pool shadow that will appear in the different areas of the border by sliding the bars. You will need different settings for different size graphics.

There is no right or wrong way to set it. I try to get it somewhat evenly shadowed. Often times I find the shadowing is a little light on the bottom. Slide it around until you see something you like.

Again, you can always undo and try again. That is something nice about the newer versions of Paint Shop Pro. There was only one undo in PSP4.

Here is what the Help says about the undo in PSP7:

"The number of operations you can undo depends on the settings in the Undo tab in the General Program Preferences dialog box. It is limited only by the disk space in your computer."

Here is what you'll have after applying the pool shadow. The marching ants should still be there on the frame.

graphic with Pool Shadow

Now you can give the frame a 3-D effect by selecting Effects|3-D effects|Inner Bevel. Here are the settings I used. Save as "Frame" since you will probably want to make more frames in the future and then you won't have to repeat entering the values. You'll be able to select "frame" from the drop down menu near the top.

Inner Bevel for frame

Click on Okay. Now go to Effects|Sharpen|Sharpen more. This will give your frame a shinier gold appearance.
Next click on Effects|3-D effects|Drop Shadow

Drop Shadow

Repeat changing the vertical and horizontal values to "-2."

Go to Selection|Select none to see your finished product.

You can also make your frames a shiny non-gold color
by making them a different color than the icky green to begin with.
Just remember that the Pool Shadow filter
will lighten parts of the color some.
Here is another example.

See, I was right, Maurice. I dreamed about it last night.
